Good garden fence paint does two jobs at once. It protects, and it transforms. A decent coat can stop timber rotting, prevent rust on metal gates and give a tired-looking plot a new lease of life. All without a major landscaping budget.

FAQs

Do I need to prime my fence before painting?

Whether you need to prime your fence before painting depends on the product and the surface. Many of our fence and shed paints are 3-in-1 formulas. They prime, seal and protect in one coat. For bare metal gates or heavily weathered timber, using a dedicated primer first will give you better adhesion and a longer-lasting finish. If you're unsure, drop us a message and we'll advise based on your specific surface.

How long does fence paint take to dry?

Most of our fence paints are touch dry in as little as 2-4 hours under normal conditions. Full cure takes longer, so avoid painting when rain is forecast. Temperature matters too. Very cold or humid weather slows drying significantly. Aim to paint on a dry day above 10°C for best results. Always check the individual product data sheet for accurate guidance.

Can I use fence paint on metal gates?

Yes, you can use our fence paint on metal gates. Our Exterior Fence & Shed Paint is a good example of a multi-surface formula that handles metal without a separate metal primer. That said, heavily rusted or galvanised metalwork may benefit from a specialist primer first. We stock both if you need them.

Is fence paint UV resistant?

Our fence and shed paints are formulated to handle outdoor exposure, including UV light. This is especially important for darker or more vibrant colours, which can fade quickly with cheaper paints. UV-resistant coatings help maintain the colour and protect the surface underneath from sun damage. They're particularly useful in south-facing gardens that get prolonged direct light in summer.

How much fence paint do I need for a standard garden fence?

Fence paint coverage varies by product and surface texture. As a rough guide, a 5L tin will typically cover around 25-35m² on smooth surfaces. Rough-sawn timber absorbs more paint and will need more. If you're doing both sides of a fence or painting over bare, untreated wood, factor in an extra coat. Our team can help you calculate quantities, just get in touch before you order.
