Understanding RAL Paints Colour Coding

The RAL paints system has expanded massively since its inception in 1927 and there are now 4 different colour charts available. These include

  • RAL Design
  • RAL Effect
  • RAL Plastics.

Unless otherwise stated, our RAL paints refer to the RAL Classic chart and the 213 colours included within it.


Classic RAL paints have a 4-digit ID number and an additional name to identify them. For example, 9012 Clean Room White.


As a general guide, the RAL codes cover the following tones:

  • RAL 1xxx - Yellow
  • RAL 2xxx - Orange
  • RAL 3xxx - Red
  • RAL 4xxx - Violet
  • RAL 5xxx - Blue
  • RAL 6xxx - Green
  • RAL 7xxx - Grey
  • RAL 8xxx - Brown
  • RAL 9xxx - White/black
