Black Fence Paint

Black fence paint can show fading more obviously if the paint quality is poor. You'll notice a greying or chalky finish over time. Our black fence paints are UV-resistant, which significantly slows this down. Applying a proper topcoat and doing light maintenance every few years keeps the colour looking sharp. Starting with a clean, primed surface makes a big difference too.

Yes, several products in our range are multi-surface formulas. Our Black Enamel Paint and Exterior Fence & Shed Paint both work on metal as well as wood, concrete, stone and brick. If your gate is showing rust or is heavily weathered, a zinc phosphate primer first will give you a much better base and longer-lasting result.

It's a common concern that black fence paint will make your garden appear smaller. But in practice the opposite is often true. Dark fences tend to recede visually, making a garden feel deeper rather than closed in. Paired with pale planting or light-coloured paving, a black fence can open a space up rather than box it in.

For most surfaces in reasonable condition, two coats of fence paint will give you solid, even coverage. Black is a strong pigment, so you may get away with one coat on smooth timber. But two coats always gives a more durable finish. If you're painting over a light-coloured or previously bare surface, don't skip the second coat.

Multi-use depends on the product. Our Black Wood Paint and Black Enamel Paint are both multi-surface formulas, so they can work on furniture as well as fences.
