Does grey fence paint show up dirt and algae more than other colours?

Grey fence paint shows dirt less than white, and less than darker colours in certain conditions. Mid-tones like grey are fairly forgiving. That said, algae and mould growth will show over time in any shaded or damp garden.

An annual wash with a mild fungicidal solution keeps things looking tidy and extends the life of the topcoat considerably. Regardless of the colour you've chosen.

You can paint over an existing brown or green fence treatment with grey paint. Though the existing treatment needs to be in good condition first. No peeling, no active mould, no loose material.

If the old product was a soak-in preservative rather than a film-forming paint, you'll need to check compatibility. In most cases, a thorough clean and a primer coat will give you a stable base. Our team can advise if you're unsure about what's already on your fence.

Is grey fence paint suitable for metal railings as well as timber?

Yes, our Grey Enamel Paint and the Exterior Fence & Shed Paint are both multi-surface formulas. They're suitable for metal, wood, concrete, stone and brick.

For metalwork showing rust or corrosion, we'd recommend applying a zinc phosphate primer beforehand. It gives you much better adhesion and significantly improves how long the topcoat lasts in exposed conditions.

How do I get a smooth, even finish with grey fence paint on rough-sawn timber?

Rough-sawn timber is thirsty and textured, which can make the first coat of grey paint look patchy; don't panic, that's normal.

Work the paint into the grain on the first coat rather than worrying about coverage. Let it dry fully, then apply a second coat more smoothly across the surface. A good quality brush or short-pile roller makes a real difference to the final result.
