Is epoxy paint good for boats?

Yes, epoxy paint is one of the best choices you can make for a boat. It forms a hard-wearing coating that bonds tightly to the surface and resists water, moisture, chemicals and abrasion. If you need to paint a hull, bilge, deck or internal area, a two pack epoxy gives you better long-lasting protection compared to single pack paints.

Is the epoxy top coat UV resistant?

No, two-pack epoxy topcoat is not UV resistant. The colour will chalk and fade with prolonged UV exposure. The quality and performance of the product are not affected, only the colour. So for above-waterline areas where appearance really matters, you may want to consider a single pack top coat.

What is the best epoxy for boats?

The best epoxy paint for boats depends on where you're painting. For hulls and bilges above or below the waterline, our Two Pack Epoxy Bilge & Hull Paint offers high chemical and corrosion resistance on metal, fibreglass and GRP. For decks, our Two Pack Epoxy Marine Deck Paint is built to handle heavy traffic and harsh weather.

If you need grip underfoot, particularly in engine rooms or areas prone to spills, then our Non-Slip Two Pack Epoxy Marine Paint is ideal. And for bare metal or fibreglass surfaces, always start with one of our compatible epoxy primers before applying a topcoat.

Is epoxy paint waterproof?

Yes. Once fully cured, epoxy paint creates a moisture-resistant barrier that holds up against water immersion. That is exactly why it's used so widely in marine applications.

Can I paint epoxy over single-pack boat paint?

No—you cannot apply epoxy over single-pack boat paint. The epoxy will react with and attack the existing single-pack coating, leading to poor adhesion and potential failure.

You will need to either:

  • Continue using a compatible single-pack paint system, or
  • Completely remove the existing paint back to the bare substrate and start again with a full two-pack epoxy system.
Do I need to use a primer before the epoxy top coat?

Yes, a primer is always recommended on bare metal and fibreglass/GRP. There are different levels of anti-corrosive protection in epoxy primers—it all depends on your requirements and the environment. Common options include two-pack epoxy zinc-rich, two-pack epoxy high-build (HB) zinc phosphate, and two-pack epoxy MIO (micaceous iron oxide).

For bare fibreglass/GRP it's the two pack epoxy fibreglass primer.
