What Is Bitumen Paint Used For?

|

Bitumen paint is a solvent-based, waterproof black coating used to protect steel, iron, timber, concrete and roofing materials against water damage, corrosion and rot. In this article, we'll explore the different uses of bitumen paint beyond roofing.

What Is Bitumen Paint?

Bitumen paint is a full-bodied, solvent-based coating made using refined bitumen as its base. When dry, it forms a hard film that is highly resistant to water, salt solutions, dilute acids, alkalis and alcohol. This combination of properties makes it a reliable choice wherever long-term waterproofing and corrosion resistance are needed.

It is not a decorative paint; it is a protective coating. Available in black only, it is designed for surfaces that require serious protection rather than a decorative finish.

What Is Bitumen Paint Used For?

Bitumen paint is used for much more than roofing. Common applications include:

Steel and metal protection:

Bitumen paint for steel provides a durable, water-resistant coating for steel and metal surfaces, helping to protect against corrosion. It is commonly used on gates, railings, corrugated steel sheets, downpipes, storage tanks, structural steelwork, fencing and other metalwork where a tough protective finish is required.

Roofing and flat roofs:

One of its most common applications, bitumen paint is used as a waterproof coating on concrete roofs, roofing felt, fibre cement sheets and asphalt to seal surfaces and extend their service life.

Timber and fence posts:

Bitumen paint for wood penetrates and protects timber against rot. It is widely used on fence posts, gates, sheds and any timber in contact with the ground or exposed to persistent moisture.

Marine and boat hulls:

Bitumen paint for boats is a popular choice for narrowboat and canal cruiser hull blacking. It forms a waterproof film on bare steel that withstands constant exposure to water.

Agricultural use:

Frequently applied to corrugated iron, cladding, storage tanks and outbuildings on farms where a durable, cost-effective protective coating is required.

Below-ground and damp-proof applications:

Waterproof bitumen paint is commonly used on below-ground concrete, foundations and any surface subject to persistent moisture.

How Do You Use Bitumen Paint?

Applying bitumen paint correctly comes down to three key stages: preparation, mixing and application.

Prepare the surface: Ensure the surface is clean, dry and free from loose material, grease and rust. Remove any surface rust from steel using a wire brush or mechanical preparation. Timber should be dry, clean and structurally sound before painting.

Mix thoroughly before use: Bitumen paint contains heavy pigments that settle during storage. Mix thoroughly using a slow-speed drill mixer or palette knife for 3–5 minutes before application. Poor mixing can lead to inconsistent coverage and drying.

Apply by brush, roller or spray: Apply using a brush, solvent-resistant medium-pile roller or suitable spray equipment. Apply thin, even coats and avoid overloading the surface.

Allow sufficient drying time: Bitumen paint is typically touch dry within 2–4 hours and can usually be overcoated after 12–24 hours. Full protective performance develops after approximately seven days. Do not submerge the coated surface until it has fully cured.

Thin if required: If necessary, thin with T0001 White Spirit. Always mix the paint thoroughly before adding any thinner.
