What Is Garage Floor Paint?

Concrete is porous. Left bare, it absorbs oil and moisture. Garage floor paint seals the surface, stops dusting, and resists staining from vehicles and chemicals. It also brightens a dark garage instantly, since a painted finish reflects far more light than raw concrete.

Beyond looks, a sealed floor is quicker to sweep and mop, and it makes oil leaks much easier to spot. That matters if your garage doubles as a workshop rather than just somewhere to park. It also protects the concrete itself, since freeze-thaw cycles and constant vehicle weight gradually wear away an untreated surface.

What's the Difference Between Single Pack Garage Floor Paint and Garage Floor Epoxy?

“What’s the difference between a single pack and epoxy?” is one of our most frequently asked questions. 

• Single pack garage floor paint is a single component product with no additional catalyst required. It still needs to be thoroughly stirred before application to ensure the pigments are evenly mixed. It is suitable for light to medium foot traffic.

• Garage floor epoxy It is a two component (two pack) coating consisting of paint and a catalyst, which are mixed together before application. Once cured, it forms a tough, hard-wearing finish designed to withstand heavy traffic, including regular vehicle use. 

Epoxy floor paint should not be applied over single pack paint, as it will attack the existing coating, causing it to bubble and pickle. 

If your garage sees occasional foot traffic, our Concrete Floor Paint is usually enough. Which Is the Best Floor Paint for My Garage?

There's no single "best" floor paint for your garage. It depends entirely on how the space is used.

• Daily vehicle use or oil exposure: choose a two pack epoxy for heavy-duty protection.

• Occasional storage or a light-use workshop: Single pack concrete floor paint is quick and cost-effective.

How Do I Prepare a Garage Floor Before Painting?

Garage floor preparation decides whether a coating adheres properly and actually lasts. Rushing this stage is the single biggest cause of peeling and early failure.

Never seal new or bare concrete with PVA or latex based sealers before painting. These products can prevent our floor paints from properly adhering to the concrete, which may lead to coating failure. 

• New concrete should be at least 3 months old before painting 

• Sweep and vacuum away all loose debris and dust

• Degrease any oil or brake fluid stains thoroughly

• Check for cracks or flaking concrete and repair these first

• Test for surface moisture, since damp concrete stops coatings curing correctly

• Lightly key smooth or power-floated concrete, as well as previously painted surfaces, to provide a good key for the new coating.

Do I Need To Prime The Floor Before Painting?

When applying our Single Pack Floor Paint or Two Pack Epoxy (Solvent Based) to bare concrete, a separate primer isn't required. Instead, we recommend thinning the first coat by around 20% with the compatible thinners. Don't be concerned if the paint appears very thin – this helps it penetrate the porous concrete and seal the surface. After 12–24 hours, apply the second coat neat.

With our Solvent Free Epoxy, no primer or thinned first coat is required. Once the paint and catalyst are mixed, it can be applied directly to the prepared concrete.

Please note: Bare concrete can be very porous, so the first coat of Solvent Free Epoxy may achieve less than the stated 20m² coverage per 5kg pack.

How Long Does Epoxy Floor Paints Take to Cure?

Our Two Pack Epoxy and Solvent Free Epoxy Floor Paints will not cure at temperatures below 10°C. If heating is required, maintain a consistent temperature of at least 10°C both day and night using dry heat. Do not use gas heaters, as they add moisture to the air, which will prevent the paint from curing correctly. 

For Two Pack Epoxy and Solvent Free Epoxy, based on temperatures of 10–20°C:

• Touch dry: 2–4 hours

• Overcoat: 12–24 hours

• Walkable: 3–4 days

• Full cure: 7 days before allowing vehicles onto the floor

Pot life once mixed:

• Two Pack Solvent Based Epoxy: 4–6 hours (temperature dependent) 

• Solvent Free Epoxy: approximately 45 minutes

If maintaining a consistent temperature above 10°C isn’t practical during the colder months, a low temperature curing epoxy may be a better option. For exactly this reason, we manufacture a Winter Grade Low Temperature Two Pack Epoxy, formulated to cure reliably in cooler conditions. 

Winter Grade Low Temperature Epoxy curing times at 0°C:

• Touch Dry: 24 hours

• Through Dry: 3 days

• Full Cure: 7 days

• Overcoat Window: 36–48 hours

How Many Coats of Paint Does a Garage Floor Need?

Garage floors always require two coats for an even, durable finish.

• The first coat seals the surface and may look patchy on porous concrete.

• The second coat provides the full, even colour and finished appearance.

• A third coat may be needed when applying a light colour over a darker existing coating.

How Much Paint Do I Need? 

Our Single Pack Floor Paint and Two Pack Epoxy cover approximately 8m² per litre, while our Solvent Free Epoxy covers approximately 4m² per 5kg pack.

These are approximate figures and do not account for surface absorption, application method or wastage, all of which can affect actual coverage.

How Many Coats Of Paint Do I Need?

Two coats are always recommended. On bare concrete, the first coat can look very patchy as the porous surface absorbs the paint unevenly. Once the second coat is applied, it provides a more even, consistent colour and finish. 

How Long Before I Can Drive On The Floor?

The coating must be left to fully cure for 7 days after the final coat before vehicles are driven or parked on the surface. 

Can I Paint Any Of These Floor Paints Over Water Based Floor Paints?

No. We do not recommend applying any of these floor paints directly over an existing water based floor paint, as compatibility and adhesion cannot be guaranteed. 

Can I Apply Epoxy Paint Over Existing Single Pack Floor Paint? 

No. Two Pack Epoxy should not be applied over existing Single Pack Floor Paint, as it will attack the coating underneath, causing it to bubble and pickle. The existing single pack coating must be fully removed before applying epoxy. 

Does garage floor epoxy stop oil and diesel stains for good?

A properly cured two pack epoxy resists most oil and diesel far better than single pack paint. Even so, spills should be wiped up promptly to avoid staining over time. Workshops with regular chemical exposure should always choose epoxy over single pack paint.

Will garage floor paint cure properly in an unheated winter garage?

Single Pack Floor Paint can still dry below 10°C, although drying and overcoating times will be considerably longer in colder conditions. Two Pack Epoxy and Solvent Free Epoxy, however, will not cure below 10°C.

For colder conditions, our Winter Grade Low Temperature Two Pack Epoxy is specifically formulated to cure at lower temperatures, making it a better choice for unheated garages during the winter months.
