Marine Wood Primer

Our marine wood primer is based on a polyurethane enamel resin, making it ideal for use on wooden boats and barges. Using a primer on wood helps to seal the surface, improve adhesion, and create a uniform base for the topcoat. It is especially useful over poor or uneven existing paint, helping to smooth out the surface and ensure a more even, consistent finish. All our wooden boat paints and primers are suitable for brush, roller, and spray application.

FAQs

Do I need to use a primer when painting a wooden boat?

Bare wood does not need a primer. We recommend thinning the first coat down by 20% with compatible thinners that will then act as the primer. If you are going over existing paint we only recommend if the existing coating is in a poor condition, as the primer effectively covers patchy or unevenly coloured areas, creating a smooth, even base for the topcoat application. It's especially useful when changing colours from dark to light shades, ensuring optimal coverage and colour uniformity.

What is the best marine paint for a wooden boat?

The best marine paint to use when painting a wooden boat is our marine boat paint for wood as it is a flexible coating meaning with the expansion and contraction of the wood the coating doesn't crack as well as offering chemical resistance. This polyurethane white spirit based paint also offers excellent UV resistance, helping to prevent chalking, fading, and degradation when exposed to prolonged sunlight.

If you are looking to paint below the waterline you can use our Bitumen Paint for Boats. This is an extremely waterproof paint, protecting wood from harsh water damage.

How should marine paint be applied on bare wood?

Be sure to stir the paint well before use.

Step 1 - Clean and Prep: Ensure the substrate is dry and clean of any dirt, oil or grease. If there is any moisture in the wood, it can cause delamination and lead to a loss of adhesion.

Step 2 - First Coat: Thin the first coat by 20% with T0001 White Spirit to ensure the paint impregnates the wood. This will act as the primer/sealer.

Step 3 - Top Coat: 12-24 hours after applying the first coat, you can apply the second coat of topcoat. Two coats of topcoat are recommended for optimal coverage.

How long does marine deck paint take to dry?

Marine deck paint is touch dry in 2-4 hours. Overcoating is 12-24 hours, the area can be walked over after 3-4 days. Full protective properties are achieved after 7 days. The substrate should not be put into water until this curing time has passed.

Is a non-slip finish available in the marine deck paint?

Yes, we have a non-slip finish available in the single pack marine deck paints which is suitable for wood. We pre-mix an aggregate into the paint which gives it a rough textured finish reducing the risk of slipping.
