Hull Paint for Boats

For most steel and GRP hulls used in freshwater or moderate environments, a single pack polyurethane system provides reliable UV and chemical resistance.

Where conditions are more demanding, such as saltwater exposure, a two pack epoxy system is the better choice.

Whichever system you choose, correct surface preparation and priming are essential. Bare metal requires an anti-corrosive primer, GRP and fibreglass need specialist primers for adhesion, and galvanised steel must be treated before coating.

If you're unsure which system is right for your vessel, our team can help you select the most suitable option based on your application and environment.

All products are available in 1L, 2.5L and 5L sizes with multi-buy discounts across the range. If you're not sure which hull paint system is right for your vessel or environment, contact our experienced technical team today.

FAQs

What is the best paint for a boat hull?

The best paint for a boat hull depends on the material your hull is made from and where you use the boat. For steel hulls in freshwater, our 1k Polyurethane Hull Paint is a great all-round choice as it's UV resistant and can be used above and below the waterline. For more demanding environments or long-term water submersion, our Two Pack Epoxy Bilge & Hull Paint offers superior corrosion resistance and is better suited to hulls that spend extended periods underwater. For narrowboats on canals, black bitumen paint applied directly to bare steel is a simple, proven option.

Does hull paint need a primer?

In most cases, yes. If you're painting bare metal, you'll need an anti-corrosive primer before applying any topcoat. Our hull paint topcoats don't have the anti-corrosion properties to protect bare steel on their own. For fibreglass and GRP hulls, a fibreglass-specific primer is essential as the topcoat won't adhere directly to those surfaces without it. Galvanised steel needs treatment with Mordant Solution (T-Wash) first, followed by a metal primer. If you're painting wood, no separate primer is needed, just thin the first coat of topcoat by around 20% with compatible thinners and that acts as the primer and sealer. The only product that can go straight onto bare steel without a primer is our black bitumen paint.

What hull paint do you recommend for saltwater?

For saltwater, we recommend a full two pack epoxy system for metal and GRP hulls. Start with our Two Pack Epoxy Zinc Rich or Zinc Phosphate Primer as a sacrificial anti-corrosion base coat, follow that with our Two Pack Epoxy MIO (Micaceous Iron Oxide) as an intermediate waterproofing barrier, and then apply our Two Pack Epoxy Bilge & Hull Paint as the topcoat. This three-stage system gives the strongest available protection against the corrosive conditions that saltwater creates. It's what we'd recommend for steel hulls, and any vessel regularly submerged in seawater. Please note this system is not suitable for wood.

Can I paint epoxy over single-pack boat paint?

No—you cannot apply epoxy over single-pack boat paint. The epoxy will react with and attack the existing single-pack coating, leading to poor adhesion and potential failure.

You will need to either:

  • Continue using a compatible single-pack paint system, or
  • Completely remove the existing paint back to the bare substrate and start again with a full two-pack epoxy system.
