FAQs
What is the best marine primer?
The best marine primer is epoxy-based, such as Zinc Phosphate, Zinc Rich and MIO (Micaceous Iron Oxide). The marine epoxy primers are the best for anti-corrosive and waterproofing protection especially if they are painted below waterline, but would only be used on metal. Epoxy primers are not suitable for wood or to go over any existing single pack paints. The best marine primer to use will also depend on the substrate and what type of protection you need. A Two-Pack Epoxy Fiberglass primer is the most suitable option for bare fibreglass.
What is the best primer for a fiberglass boat?
The best primer for a fibreglass boat is either a single-pack or two-pack epoxy fibreglass primer. If you are painting below the water line the Two Pack Epoxy Fibreglass primer is recommended.
Is boat primer waterproof?
No, a boat primer is not waterproof on its own. Primers are designed to promote adhesion and provide corrosion protection, but they are not fully waterproof. A primer only becomes waterproof once a compatible topcoat is applied as part of a complete paint system.
Can I use marine paint primers above and below the waterline?
Yes all single-pack and two-pack epoxy primers can be used above and below the water line. Two-Pack Epoxy primers are always recommended to be used below the water line as they will not soften if the substrate is in the water for a long period of time.
How long does marine primer take to dry and when can I overcoat?
Marine primers must be left to dry for the appropriate time before applying the overcoat. Below are the recommended drying times for our marine primer paints:
- Single-pack fibreglass primer - overcoat after 1 hour and within 4 hours. If you go over 4 hours it will need to be left 12 hours after as the coating can attack itself.
- Single pack marine metal primer - overcoat 12-24 hours.
- Two Pack Epoxy - overcoat 12-24 hours.
All primers must be overcoated with a compatible topcoat.
