FAQs

What is the best epoxy paint for boat bilge?

The best epoxy paint for boat bilges is our Two Pack Epoxy Bilge & Hull Paint. It's a two-component epoxy specifically formulated for harsh marine conditions, both above and below the waterline. It works on primed mild steel, fibreglass, GRP and treated galvanised steel. Once fully cured it delivers a tough and hard-wearing finish that resists moisture, abrasion and chemicals. If you're painting bare metal, pair it with our Two Pack Epoxy Zinc Phosphate Primer for the best protection.

Is bilge paint for boats waterproof?

Yes, absolutely. Waterproofing is the whole point of bilge paint. Our Two Pack Epoxy Bilge & Hull Paint forms a tough and moisture-resistant coating that holds up below the waterline once fully cured (allow 7 days before putting the vessel back in the water). Our black bitumen paint is also extremely waterproof. It's a full-bodied bituminous coating that's been used for years to protect narrowboats, canal cruisers and marine structures from water attack.

Does bilge paint need primer?

In most cases, yes, you'll need to apply a primer before using bilge paint. If you're painting bare metal, our epoxy bilge paint doesn't have built-in anti-corrosive properties, so you'll need to apply a compatible primer first. These include our Two Pack Epoxy Zinc Phosphate Primer, MIO Metal Primer or Zinc Rich Primer. If you're working on bare fibreglass or gel coat, you'll need our Two Pack Epoxy Fibreglass Primer, as the topcoat won't bond directly to those surfaces without it. The exception is our black bitumen paint, which can be applied directly to bare steel without a primer.

How long does bilge paint take to dry?

Our Two Pack Epoxy Bilge & Hull Paint is touch dry in around 2 to 4 hours. You can apply a second coat 12 to 24 hours after the first. That said, full curing takes 7 days, so don't put the boat back in the water until that period has passed. Our bitumen paint has a faster touch dry time of just 2 to 4 hours too. Bear in mind that drying times depend on temperature and ventilation. Avoid applying epoxy paints below 10°C, as the coating won't cure properly in the cold.

What's the difference between bilge paint and regular marine paint?

Bilge paint is a specific type of marine paint designed for the inside of the hull and areas that regularly sit in water or bilge fluid. It needs to handle not just water but also oil, chemicals and the general grime that collects in a boat's bilge. Regular marine paint is more focused on UV resistance and appearance above the waterline.

How does bitumen paint compare with epoxy bilge paint?

Both bitumen paint and epoxy bilge paint protect against water, but they work differently and suit different situations. Bitumen paint is a single-pack coating. Open the tin and apply straight away. It's simple, cost-effective and excellent for narrowboats and canal cruisers on bare steel. It dries to an odourless and taint-free black film and also works on concrete, wood and metal beyond just marine use.

Epoxy bilge paint is a two-pack system that you mix before use. It's harder and more chemically resistant, making it better suited to demanding environments like seawater vessels and offshore structures. It's the stronger long-term choice for fibreglass and GRP boats or anywhere you need serious protection against corrosion and chemicals. If you're unsure which is right for your vessel, contact our expert team today and they can point you in the right direction.
